This County of Los Angeles Public Library database is probably the most comprehensive source available anywhere for biographical encyclopedias and artcles. JSTOR is a subscription database that is now offering its early journal content (material published before 1923 in the US and before 1870 outside the US) free of charge to non-subscribers. Students can also now open free individual accounts to access a portion of the database articles, saving up to three at a time for online reading.
